Fenton Chess Club

About the Club:

Fenton Chess Club have gone through several different names during their short history but have retained the same ethos throughout their existance, of a friendly club always willing to welcome new players and extend the hand of friendship to other clubs too. The club have finally settled at Temple Street Methodist Church in the heart of Fenton after several problems following the introduction of the smoking ban. The club is now run by Mark Whitby and John Amison, and they operate three teams in the North Staffs League, down from 4 due to losing a few players. However, the club say this is only a temporary thing and are hoping to be back on the rise soon now they have a new venue.

Map Link: Google Map Link Directions: For most travellers, the best route to take is the A500. If you are coming from the North, travelling South, then exit the A500 at the first slip road following the hanley turn off (signposted Hanley, Newcastle, A53). This will take you to a set of lights. It will be signposted for Fenton. Get in the middle lane at the lights to head straight on. Keep in the left hand lane to stay off the A500 and then at the next set of lights, get into the left hand lane to turn left. If you are heading from the South, travelling North, keep on the A500 until you pass the A50 turning, signposted Derby, Uttoxeter. Get into the left hand of 3 lanes to come off here, but beware as this is a traffic hotspot and can cause problems. At the small set of lights at the bottom of the hill, get into the right hand lane. Then at the lights at the top of the hill get in the right hand lane to turn right. Carry on straight on and you will be at the same place as those travelling from the North. For all drivers from the A500, head under the bridge and get into the right hand lane to take the second exit at the roundabout. Head up the hill until you get to a set of traffic lights. Head straight on there (left hand lane) and then at the roundabout head straight on, past KFC on the right hand side. Once there, be careful approaching the next roundabout as the lanes merge and get confusing. You want to be in the left hand lane to head left at the next roundabout. Follow the round round for half a mile or so until you see Portmerion factory shop on the left. Just before that is Goldenhill Road. Turn left down there and the New Penny is on your left after 300 yards or so.

Other Information:

The venue is no smoking inside although smokers can use the car park outside to smoke. There is a fully licensed bar with friendly hospitable staff and an excellent landlord and landlady, and the chess club have exclusive use of the back room in the evenings. Sandwiches are provided although any takers are expected to make a small contribution towards costs. The venue has it's own private car park. Junior players are welcome.
